Bihar Assembly Elections 2010

6th Sept. 2010, The Election Commission announced the schedule for the elections to the 243-member Bihar Assembly. The elections, spread over six phases, will start on 21st Oct.

The first phase of polls will be held on October 21 and the last phase on November 20; counting of votes will take place on November 24. Notification for the first phase will be issued on September 27. The Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate affect.

The commission has taken additional precautions in view of concerns over electronic voting machines, unauthorised expenditure by candidates and possible Naxalite violence.

Announcing the poll schedule, Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi also said the commission had issued a new set of instructions regarding the first-level check of EVMs. Political parties will be involved in the first-level checking of EVMs before they are released for voting.

An estimated 5.50 crore electorate would exercise their franchise to elect a 243-member House in the month-long exercise. The second, third, fourth, fifth and final phases would take place on October 24 & 28 and November 1, 9 & 20th. Polling would be held through EVMs in 56,943 polling stations.
