Mamta Banerjee was born on 5th January, 1955. She Her father Late Promileswar Banerjee was a Freedom-fighter. Her mother Smt. Gayatri Banerjee provided immense support to her husband to fight for country's freedom despite the economic pangs of a middle class family. She has MA and LLB degrees to her credit.
She has been politically active from young age and has held various position at state and national level and was an active member of Congress party. She was first elected as a member of parliament in 1984 from Jadavpur constituency. She was also elected from south Calcutta in 1991 and 1996.
She founded All India Trinamool Congress party in year 1997 and formal announcement came in Jan 1998 owing to differences with other congress leaders. Her party became a major opposition party against CPM in west Bengal. She joined hand with NDA in 1999 and during the NDA tenure she served as a cabinet minister for Coal & mines and Railways.
She is known for her dynamic political speeches and a growing figure in Indian politics.
Mamta Banerjee has been a major player in forcing Tata Nano car plant to shift out of West Bengal in 2008. In the 15th Lok Sabha Elections, her party, Trinamool Congress had an alliance with the Congress party and she won the elections comfortably from Kolkata Dakshin.
Earlier she won the elections from Calcutta South constituency in 2004 General Elections.
