Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi was born on 17th September, 1950 at Vadnagar, a small town in Mehsana district of North Gujarat. Modi grew up in a culture that instilled in him the values of generosity, benevolence and social service. He is politically active from the young age and was president of the ABVP.

He played a key role in the rise of BJP in Gujarat and now a dominating political figure of Gujarat. He first became the chief minister of Gujarat in Oct. 2001 when then chief minister Keshubhai patel had to resign following the defeat of BJP in the by-elections. Since, he became the chief minister BJP has performed better owing to his increased popularity. In the 2002 state assembly elections, BJP won a clear majority in the stewardship of Mr. Modi and he was reelected for the third consecutive term as a chief minister when BJP won the elections in 2007.

He was accused of involvement in Gujarat riots but subsequent investigations gave him a clean chit.

He is known for his political firepower and a star campaigner for the BJP. He has attracted considerable media attention in the run up to 15th Lok Sabha elections owing to his remarks about congress party.

In his stewardship, party has done well in bye-elections held for the Gujarat State Assembly, during September 2009.
