Sharad Pawar (Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar), was born on the 12th December 1940. Mr. Pawar hails from a family of Baramati, Pune [Maharashtra,India]. Started early in politics, he became president of the State Youth Congress at 24 and 5 years later became the member of the State Cabinet. In 1978, he became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra at the age of 38. Mr. Pawar completed two more terms as Chief Minister before being appointed country's Defence Minister in June 1991. In March 1993, he became Chief Minister of the state for the fourth time. In 1995, he was elected as a Member Of Parliament(Lok sabha) and became Leader of the Congress Party in Lok Sabha. Mr. Sharad Pawar was once again elected as a Member Of Parliament(Lok Sabha) in 1998 and became the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. Mr.Pawar has been the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for seven years out of his 32 years in politics.

He grew in stature and known as a shrewd politician and was one the major contender to beg the Congress’s projected PM candidate in 1999 Lok Sabha Elections. However, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was a unanimous choice for the same. In 1999, owing to the said dispute, Mr. Sharad Pawar along with a few other members formed a new party called NCP. At that point of time, he was the front runner/aspirant to become prime minister. His party (NCP) has shown a decent performance over the last decade and is currently a congress ally and a member of ruling UPA alliance.

He was also elected as the chairman of the Board of Control for cricket in India (BCCI) during 2005 and 2008. Currently, he is the president of the Nationalist Congress Party.

Mr. Pawar, has seen various ups and down in his political career. In the run up to the 15th Lok Sabha elections, his party NCP had seat sharing arrangement with Congress to contest from Maharashtra. However, his presence at some of the rallies held by Third Front’s parties and talks of a Marathi prime minister had raised concerned in the Congress and attracted significant media attention.

He won the election from Madha constituency in the state of Maharashtra. He was the MP from Baramati in 2004 General elections.
