Biju Janata Dal
The Biju Janata Dal is a major political party of the state of Orissa, headed by Naveen Patnaik, son of former state chief minister Biju Patnaik. BJD was formed as a breakaway faction of Janata Dal in 1997. BJD had been a member of the NDA and is the ruling party in Orissa state.
In recent run up to the General Elections 2009, BJD has withdrawn its membership from the NDA on dispute over seat sharing with BJP. The party took the help of the INC and others to retain power in Orissa.
BJD contested the elections 2009 at its own and won 14 seats with a gain of 3 seats from previous elections in 2004.
