Chennai, 21 Aug: The DMK-Congress combine has made a clean sweep in the by-elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning all the five seats.
The DMK won in Cumbum, Bargur and Ilayankudi by margins ranging from 40,000 to nealry 60,000 votes and the Congress in Srivaikuntam and Thondamuthur by equally comfortable margins.
Consequently the DMK’s strength in the 234- member house has gone to 99 and that of the Congress to 36, further consolidating their majority.
